N9/ N10 Motorway – Bypass Surgery for Carlow
Thursday 11th May 2006 was a modern day historical event for County Carlow when Martin Cullen, Minister for Transport turned the sod on the new N9 Carlow Town Bypass.
As Ireland’s economic boom continues with the continuing development and expansion of our towns and villages so to has the number of vehicles using our roads. Carlow Town is located on the main N9 road between Dublin and Waterford cities and increasingly the Shamrock Square, Barrack Street and Kilkenny and Dublin Roads of the town have been chocked with traffic as a result of the high volumes that this road currently carries. A bypass of the town has been spoken and debated for many years and now it is becoming a reality. The 19km bypass will take an approximate 9,000 vehicles out of the town. It is expected that the Carlow bypass will be open by 2008 and will flow along the eastern side of the town.

The bypass will form part of the larger N9 – N10 motorway that will see further construction through the western side of the county and eventually the creation of a motorway from Dublin to Waterford. Most of the northern section of this motorway to Carlow is already complete.
