Industry of County Carlow

Although the county has been predominately agricultural based it has had many local and national industries that have played important roles in providing employment as well as producing innovative and new products. Over the past eighty years the largest industry was the Carlow Sugar Factory. It employed hundreds of people in it various divisions from sugar production, packing, marketing, transport as well as in its other operations such as the lime works, Armer Salmon Machinery and Erin Foods. Other notable industries over the last one hundred and fifty years include Corcoran’s Mineral Water, Governey’s Boot Factory and Thompson’s Engineering Works.
